What is an Interlibrary Loan?
Literature which is not available at the Umeå University Library, or in any of Umeå's other libraries, for example Umeå Public Library and its branches or The Forestry Library, may be ordered as an interlibrary loan from another library.
Who may use Interlibrary Loan?
Patrons with a connection to Umeå University or Västerbotten County Council (VLL) may request material for research and studies on interlibrary loan. A patron shall always provide their library card number and e-mail address on the interlibrary loan application.
What is the procedure?
Before you order material, you need to make sure that the exact or similar material is not available at Umeå University Library. You must be aware that it will take time, a lot of work by our staff and results in expensive postage costs. The library will consider acquisition of requested material in the first place.
The rules of the library which lend us the book are the rules that we follow regarding being able to check out the book for use at home or if it may only be used in the library, the length of the loan period and the possibility of renewing an item. It is important that these rules are followed so that our cooperation with other libraries can be retained. The library which owns the item is the one deciding if the loan is to be of the book or if they will send us copies. Most Swedish and Nordic libraries will not lend their periodicals. Usually they will only send a copy of the article or table of contents.
How does one request materials?
Use our electronic form and fill in as much information as possible.
Materials which we borrow from outside of the Nordic countries have a fee. You can specify if you would like for us to search for materials outside of the Nordic countries. If you do not do so and we are unable to locate the items in Sweden or another Nordic country, your first request will be returned to you so that you can approve this cost.
If you are interested in archival material or video or sound cassettes from Audiovisual Material at the National Library of Sweden, please contact The Research Archives. Interlibrary loans
What happens when a request is turned in?
First, we search for the material in Sweden and then in the other Nordic countries. If it is not found, we send the request back to the patron asking for approval to search outside of the Nordic countries, and how it should be billed.
When we receive the material, we send a message to the patron. Copies are usually sent directly to the patron, if the patron has given us a university address. Currently, other patrons' articles are sent directly to their home address. Invoices are sent separately.
Rules for Interlibrary Loans
If an interlibrary loan is not returned or renewed after being recalled, your borrowing privileges will be suspended until the book is returned. If the book is not returned or renewed, you will be required to pay for the item.
